Why does posting regularly on Instagram bring in sales?

A single Instagram post does not bring in sales on its own. What brings in sales is the right person seeing you again and again, so that one day, when they need something, you are the one who comes to mind. Regular posting feeds that visibility. This article is based on what Instagram itself has explained, and it promises no result that has not been proven.

What does Instagram look at?

According to a 2023 explanation by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, these are the most important signals when content is ranked in Feed:

  1. Your activity on Instagram: what you like, share, save and comment on.
  2. The post itself: how popular it is and how quickly it gets engagement.
  3. Information about the person who posted it.
  4. Your past interactions with that person.

In Reels, most of what you see comes from accounts you do not follow. In Explore, the leading signals are likes, saves and shares. So Reels is the clearest way to reach people who do not know you yet.

How does regular posting connect to sales?

Instagram does not say this directly; what follows is reasoning drawn from the signals above:

  • A history of likes, saves, shares and comments decides who will see you again. Every new post is a chance to collect those signals again.
  • Reels are open to recommendation: a new post can be shown to someone who does not know you.
  • A buying decision rarely happens on the first contact. Trust builds when the same brand shows up in front of you several weeks in a row.

A clear limit: Instagram does not officially explain how posting frequency affects ranking, or how much posting turns into sales. So a promise like "post this many times a week and you will sell this much" would not be accurate. You measure your own account's results with your own data.

The basic rules Instagram recommends

  • Original content: content you filmed yourself, or that has not been posted on Instagram before. Reposting content taken from someone else is not recommended.
  • Short Reels: to be recommended, Reels need to be 3 minutes or shorter.
  • The first 3 seconds: hooking the viewer in the first 3 seconds is recommended.
  • Public account: Instagram states that it only recommends content from public accounts.
  • Keywords: use words relevant to your topic in the content, the caption, the bio and the hashtags.
  • Following the rules: an account that breaks the guidelines repeatedly can be removed from recommendations entirely.

Consistency over volume

The best plan is one you can keep up for a year, not a month. Posting a lot and stopping after a month does less good than posting at a reasonable pace all year round. You could build the plan like this:

  1. Decide how many posts a week you can genuinely keep up.
  2. Make some of them Reels, because that is the format that reaches new people.
  3. Give separate thought to the first 3 seconds and the first sentence of every post.
  4. Each week, check which posts got likes, saves and shares, and do more of those.
  5. Reply quickly to comments and messages.

This work repeats every week: reading the data, planning, preparing, publishing, replying. Your brand's social media agent keeps it going for you.
